BACKGROUND: Childhood malignancies include a spectrum of diseases including hematological malignancies (leukemia, lymphomas) and nonhematological tumors such as brain tumors, neuroblastoma, and Wilms tumor. Although there is adequate documentation in the western world and some parts of India, very little data about childhood malignancies, specially the nonhematological cases, are available from eastern India yet. In this study, we have analyzed the clinicodemographic profile of pediatric patients with nonhematological malignancies attending a tertiary care center of eastern India over the past 5 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed the prospectively maintained database of a tertiary care center of West Bengal in eastern India and collected the data regarding the demography, clinical profile, and treatment of nonhematological pediatric cancer patients who attended our OPD between 2019 and 2023. The objective was to assess the demographic and clinical data of pediatric malignancies in this region of the country and compare them with those of the reported literature. RESULTS: A total of 253 cases were analyzed with a median age of 4.88 (±3.32) years and a slight male predominance (a male: female ratio of 1:0.97). Wilms tumor was the single most common (24.3%) tumor found, followed by CNS neoplasms combined (15%) and germ cell tumors (13%). 73.1% patients underwent surgery, 69.5% patients received systemic chemotherapy, and 42.6% patients received radiotherapy as part of their treatment. 51% patients discontinue treatment in middle. CONCLUSION: To conclude, this study is one of its first from eastern India and will act as a stepping stone for future studies concentrating on clinicoepidemiological profiles and treatment of nonhematological pediatric malignancies.
